How to Create a Support Group

It is important for all of us to have people that support us during times like this. My support group currently is a hand full of woman that are inspirational and kind. They have inspired me to reach my highest potential this year. For example, a large part if why I’m involved with my non-profit (Marie ZQ ministry) and my radio show is due to the inspiration provided by my mentor and good friend, Yvonne Brooks.

We also have to surround ourselves with people that will help us achieve self-improvement. When I was first dating my soon to be husband I met a lovely woman. She invited me to go “clubbing” and I needed to make a choice; would getting back into that lifestyle be something beneficial? Clubbing is fine, but I was on the path towards getting married and having a family. This woman was very friendly and I’m sure we would have had a great time, but ultimately I preferred to associate with people who were on a similar trajectory, focusing on family, career, and friendship.

So, what should we look for when building up a network of support?

It is important to include people that we look up to and that we respect in our support group. So, when you are thinking about joining a support group, think about how this will help us in our lives; did the people you pick help you to build? Hold you back? Make you feel bitter, happy, frustrated, or inspired? Do they challenge you to be a little better than what you already are?
